materialism

A personal problem that myself and many millennials face in today’s ever growing society is the societal pressures to conform to social medias idea of materialism and a high end lifestyle social media is expanding and becoming more prevalent today as the image of being “rich and famous” is seen as the cause of happiness this is leaving teenagers and the younger generation feeling a sense of jealously and deprivation towards their own lifestyle. So for me and people around me the idea of branded clothing and materialistic items consumes my life for example I would choose to wear a branded piece of clothing rather then a non branded for the simple fact of fitting in, on a larger scale branded and expensive clothing has become the new standard due to what I believe is the new trend on social media. While applying a sociological imagination in historical and critical lens.

Historically materialistic items and brands weren’t perceived to be what they are today, these people were more focused on paying off items such as a morgage and a family car leaving the priorities to be with practical items instead of the more materialist items, social media wasn’t as prevalent historically leaving the idea of materialistic things to be less involved rather then the image of today, branded clothing and high end objects such as laptops and phones weren’t used in everyday life leaving these people not having to purchase the most expensive laptops or televisions. Individuals in the past weren’t driven by money they mainly focused on needs rather than wants compared to todays society where you are constantly competing with people your age to own the most high end products.

However in todays society the pressure of social media and online influences effects us all, with everybody showing off a flashy lifestyle this lifestyle can’t be further from reality and a realistic life to live. Scrolling through facebook, instagram ect watching celebrity’s and even day to day peoples highlight reel trying to fit in and conform with the new standard.

critically speaking materialistic clothing and objects is predicted to be more prevalent in younger generations this is going to creative a sense of money hungry individuals that focus on trying to please other rather than being grateful for there surroundings. in the near future teenages will expect to be given materialistic items from there parents rather that working for it which then creates a divide fo the chidden recipe as many luxury items

in concussion I feel this personal problem that me and many other millennials face will worsen with time with the pressures placed on us becoming grater as social media expands .
